Bringing the web back to human scale

Steven Rosenbaum says that:
"In a world of bandwidth and content abundance, we're overwhelmed with data, tweets, blogs, check in's and media. It used to be we surfed the web. Now the waves of the web are just too big. Curation is the new magic that makes the web work. Bringing the web back to human scale with human filters you trust and love. A powerful mix of passion and context turns noise back into signal."
Digital curation is generally referred to the process of establishing and developing long term repositories of authoritative digital assets .Digital curation entails:
  •  Collecting verifiable digital assets
  •  Providing digital asset search and retrieval
  •  Certification of the trustworthiness and integrity of the collection content
  •  Semantic and ontological continuity and comparability of the collection content

Curation has been a hot topic especially in the world where social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Digg.Tumblr,  and Pinterest are the engines of this new curation trend. We are looking to people in our networks for opinions and references. Essentially we turn to human filtering and human judgment to make recommendations, validate the information sources and improve our experience on the web.

Here is a Visual Summary of an excellent article by Steve Rosenbaum: Why Content Curation Is Here to Stay

Relativity by M. C. Escher

Visualizing information helps with learning and making your points clearly and quickly. Equally important is the fact that visualization helps the reader to see the key points at a glance and effortlessly.

Instead of making the user to hunt for your ideas in your blog posts, web pages, and documents make the key content visible and jumping out at the reader.

WebSummarizer offers VISUALIZATION and SUMMARIZATION tools that automatically identify the key topics and content and then generate visual summaries to be easily posted in your blogs and websites.

1. Let's look at the rich and detailed article about the Sun in Wikipedia. There is lots of topics and facts and the article is almost 10,000 words

A Summary is Worth a Thousand of Words

words

summary is a shortened version of the original. The main purpose of such a simplification is to highlight the major points from the genuine (much longer) subject, e.g. a text, a film or an event. The aim is to help the audience get the gist in a short period of time. (Wikipedia)

The way we learn, remember and quickly recall has a strong relationship to the way we are able to process information without overloading our senses.

If our goal in understanding information is to quickly extract and convey meaning, then the use of summaries is essential.

Visual Summaries are the key to understanding and reducing complex information to indispensable facts.

Here is an example - a Visual Summary of this post - how visualization helps with spotlighting the key topics and facts at a glance. Just click on the + sign next to the keywords to see the details:

To navigate the Visual Summary:
 * click on any + or - next to a keyword in the map
 * or click on the Expand All or Collapse All buttons.

We can say that summaries are the essence of ideas and that summarized information represents the author's best goals and intentions.

The act of instantly summarizing a web page can be an accelerator to quick understanding. By seeing the keywords in context, we, the readers, can quickly understand, connect and retain new information.

A Summary is Worth a Thousand of Words

Summarization is relevant to all information workers, irrespective of their expertise.

When we read, we always have to parse the text. We read and re-read to extract the main statements. We underline important ideas and arguments according to the main statement.  We work hard to assemble all the pertinent facts in logical order. And once all of this is done we then check if the summary reflects the original conclusions.

All of these hard and time consuming tasks can be greatly facilitated with the use of WebSummarizer. With the click of a button, the essential keywords, sentences and context are revealed and highlighted. The keywords serve as a back-of-the-book index to the key statements and facts.

You may think about the WebSummarizer summaries as an instant help in making sense by focusing on the key facts and conclusions only.

WebSummarizer summaries allow busy people to save time. It helps them to daily sift through copious amounts of information and rapidly review, compare and analyze information.
